Moving Bed Bio Reactor (MBBR)
Function
The Novotec MBBR reactor combines the advantages of the classic active sludge and fixed bed biology. The reactor is filled with floating carrier materials called chips with a high specific surface. These chips allow to grow a highly concentrated microbiology, while keeping them in constant movement. The installed aeration supplies the needed oxygen for the biology and simultaneously mixes the content of the reactor.
The movement of the chips ensures optimal contact between the biology and the waste water to be treated. Meanwhile it also prevents excess build-up of sludge on the chips.
Designing a biological treatment system using the MBBR technique, makes it possible to reduce the needed surface area as high sludge concentrations can be achieved. The biology is fixed on the chips who are easily separated from the treated water. The risk of sludge release from the system is drastically reduced compared to classic treatment plants.
Similar to fixed bed systems, the MBBR reactor is able to adjust to changes in water flow and waste charges.
